HISTORY OF WFCA AND HALL OF FAME
On May 2, 1975, a meeting was held for the purpose of forming a football coaches association. Burt Hable acted as Chairman of this meeting. Burt gave some background on the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association. He mentioned t concern of the W.I.A.A. in regard to having one organization representing all sports. A steering committee was selected made up of the following people: Jack Charlesworth, Brookfield Central; Don Barnabo, Janesville Parker; Ira Rebella, Merrill; John Brodie, Homestead; Jim Reinke, Green Bay Southwest; Gene Noonan, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln; Cal Callaway, Oregon. need for a newsletter was mentioned at this meeting.
Also, there was considerable concern in regard to promoting foot play-offs and a North-South All-Star Game.
The second meeting was held on December 1, 1975, at Stevens Point in the W.I.A.A. office. The meeting was convened Acting Chairman, Ira Rebella. It was decided at this meeting that the officers for the association the first year would be selected from the membership of the steering committee and that the board of directors and their alternates would be selected from the respondents to the 1975 fall mailing to each head football coach in the state.
The first officers representing the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association were: President - Ira Rebella, Merrill; Vice President (North) - Pete Adler, Durand; Vice President (South) - John Brodie, Homestead; Secretary/Treasurer - Cal Callaway, Oregon. From the very beginning the association listed play-offs and an all-star game as priorities. There was also considerable interest expressed by district representatives to initiate a Hall of Fame and to develop a scholarship program.
In 1976, Ed Goss was appointed Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee, and in 1980, twenty-four charter members were inducted. In 1984, the board voted to limit the number of annual inductees. Since 1980, two hundred and ninety-six outstanding coaches and contributors have been inducted into WFCA Hall of Fame. All previous induction ceremonies have been held in conjunction with the annual clinic and awards banquet. The Super Raffle, under the leadership of Dick Rundle, has covered the cost of the Hall of Fame. Dick is now the Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee.
In 1982, a WFCA Scholarship Committee was formed. Ed Goss serve Chairman until Mike Strebel took over in 1989. Since 1983, eighty-seven scholarships have been offered with an expenditure of over $25,000.
At the present time the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame is located in the Atrium at Lambeau Field in Green Bay and on the World Wide Web at the www.wifca.org.
