Norman Messmann - Poynette / Marion / Oconto Falls / Kewaunee

Born November 7, 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Attended Jefferson High School, Jefferson, Wisconsin

Graduate of Whitewater State Teachers College. Graduate work at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Coached high school football at:

Poynette for 3 years,
Marion High School for 4 years,
Oconto Falls High School for 12 years, and
Kewaunee High School for 10 years.
A graduate of Whitewater College where he was an all-conference running back in 1933.

Norm began his coaching career at Poynette High School in 1937. Teams won at least one championship at Poynette.

He served as head football, basketball, wrestling, and boxing coach at Marion High School from the fall of 1940 until the spring of 1944.

From 1944 to 1946 he served as chief gunnery officer in World War II on a Navy gun boat. He saw extensive combat and received special commendation. He retired as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.

From the fall of 1946 until the spring of 1958 he coached at Oconto Falls High School. Norm began as assistant football coach, track coach, and basketball coach, and ended as athletic director, head football coach. His record there in football was 43-22-5. While at Kewaunee he coached football, junior varsity basketball, and track. Football record was 28-18-4.

In 1967 he retired from coaching but continued to teach high school history including American History his specialty. After 37 years in the teaching field, Norm was forced to retire early because of cancer of the spine. He died August 14, 1977.
