John graduated from Delavan High School in 1953 and Milton College in 1958. The schools he has been involved with coaching at are: Blanchardville 1958-59, Iowa-Grant 1960-67, Walworth Big Foot 1968-75, and Edgerton 1976-present.

As a coach, John had championship teams as follows: Blanchardville 1958; Walworth Big Foot 1970, 1971 and 1975; and Edgerton 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990 and 1995. His teams qualified for state football championship playoffs in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990 and 1995.

John has coached many sports throughout the years including football (38 years as head coach with a 207-130-2 record), baseball (22 years), wrestling (3 years) and basketball (7 years as head coach with a 92-37 record).  

Awards received over the years include: Sayer Athletic Award Milton College 1958; Conference Coach of the Year-1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1989, 1990, 1995; Assistant Shrine Bowl Coach south team 1985; District VI Coach of the Year 1979-82; Region 17 Coach of the Year 1990, 1996.

John's professional memberships include: Wisconsin Football Coaches Association, Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association, American Football Coaches Association and Texas Football Coaches Association.
