Eugene participated in football, basketball, boxing and track in the U.S. Army (1956-57).

His football coaching career included Kaukauna, 1958; Stevens Point, 1961-62; UW-Stevens Point, 1961; and Wisconsin Rapids, 1963-1999.

Other sports Eugene coached include golf (1963-1967), track (1969-1996), baseball (1978-1982), basketball (1974-1982), swim team (1987-1990) and flag football (1994-1998).

Eugene's coaching record as head coach at Wisconsin Rapids was 33-31-2. In 1970 his team was ranked number 3.

He coached his son and grandson in flag football with a 57-2 record. As golf coach his teams had a 97-4 record with three championships, and as track coach he had three championships from 1976-1999. He was also a 9th grade coach with 11 undefeated teams and a 120-17-2 overall record.

Eugene was in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957; is in the Kaukauna Hall of Fame (1976); belongs to the WREA, WRTA, NEA, WFCA (co-founder), and coached off-season with the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bulls.

In 1988 Eugene was given the Teacher of the Year award in History and in 1996 was Regional and State Assistant Coach of the Year.
