Mike attended Bay Port High School where he was a three-sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and baseball After his senior year of football, Roger Harring recruited him to continue his football career at UW LaCrosse. 

His coaching journey began at Green Bay West High School as the defensive coordinator under Hall of Fame coach Mike Miller. Nine years later, after Miller retired, he was named West’s head football coach. During those 19 years at Green Bay West, he was part of five FRVC championships and eight playoff appearances

In 2000 Mike was called to his alma mater Bay Port High School where he brought state notoriety to the football program. During his 12 years at Bay Port he compiled a record of 90 wins and 39 losses, with 11 straight playoff appearances. Between both schools, he had a record of 142 wins and 81 losses.
