The Green Bay Packers have announced that Matt Wiederholt of the Benton/Scales Mound (Ill.) cooperative high school football program has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.

Wiederholt, in his fourth year as the head coach of Benton/Scales Mound, led the Zephyrs to a 36-34 come-from-behind victory over rival Shullsburg High School on Friday, Sept. 4. Benton/Scales Mound’s 3-0 record lands them in a three-way tie atop the Six Rivers Conference and matches their win total from the previous three seasons. Wiederholt’s Zephyrs now will travel to Black Hawk to take on the 2-1 Warriors.

“We have a group of young men who had to start a lot of games as freshmen and sophomores a few years ago,” said Wiederholt. “Now that they’re juniors and seniors, their perseverance and dedication is starting to pay off and they’re reaping the benefits of their hard work.”

A Cuba City native, Wiederholt is a 1993 graduate of Cuba City High School, where he played defensive end and offensive tackle under former Packers Coach of the Week and Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee Jim Meckstroth.

After high school, Wiederholt received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a doctorate from Edgewood College. He accepted his first coaching position for the Zephyrs as an assistant in 1995. In the following years, he was promoted to defensive coordinator before being named head coach in 2012. He is also the principal for the Scales Mound Community Unit School District in Scales Mound, Ill.

Wiederholt and his staff oversee a program of 34 players. His assistant coaching staff includes Todd Bastian, Kyle Kern, Erik Kudronwicz and Tristan Monahan.

Wiederholt and his wife, Katie, have three daughters, Emily, Ava and Elliana.
