The Green Bay Packers have announced that Jason Tubbs of Stratford High School in Stratford, Wis., has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.

Tubbs, in his fifth year as the varsity head coach of Stratford, led the No. 5 seeded Tigers to an impressive 38-0 upset victory over the No. 1 seeded Stanley-Boyd High School Orioles, in the second round of the WIAA-Division 5 State Football Tournament on Friday, Oct. 27. The two teams had met previously this year in the first game of the regular season on Aug. 18, with the Orioles defeating the Tigers 21-14. Tubbs was happy with the way his team was able to execute on both sides of the ball in this meeting.

“We had a great team effort,” Tubbs said. “A lot of our kids really worked hard, and focused in this week to play Stanley-Boyd. They had a chance in week one and came up short. But we knew that if we played together as a team, we knew we could have a great chance to win this next one. Hats off to Stanley-Boyd…they are a great group of coaches as well, but we really leaned on our running game and our defense really kind of took out their two best players and focused on them, and then we let the [offensive] yards rack up.”

Tubbs and the Tigers now look ahead to their matchup with the No. 2 seeded Amherst Falcons in the third round of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 3, at Amherst High School. The Falcons finished the regular season as the top ranked Division 5 team in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. Tubbs knows that a challenge lies ahead for his team.

“They’re the two-time defending state champs; they’ve won three out of the past five years,” Tubbs said. “We haven’t beaten them yet at their place. They’re a great team, they’re well coached. We just have to do the best we can of bottling up their quarterback. He’s a good runner [and] good passer. If we can do that, if we can tackle well and try to keep their offense on the sidelines and have our offense move the ball and get some field position, we’ll give ourselves a puncher’s chance.”

Tubbs grew up in Tomah, Wis., and graduated from Tomah High School in 1989. In high school, he was a three-sport athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. He played offensive line and linebacker for Coach Ken Jakubowski. Tubbs went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees from UW-La Crosse, one in Recreation Management 1993 and one in Elementary Education in 1999.

Tubbs began his coaching career in 1992 as the head middle school coach and co-head coach for the freshmen at the Tomah School District. In 1999, he became the head junior varsity coach at the Saydel School District in Des Moines, Iowa, and in 2001, he was head coach at Glenoak Middle School in Canton, Ohio. In 2003, Tubbs returned to Wisconsin and became the defensive coordinator for Stratford High School before being named head coach in 2013.

Tubbs and his staff oversee a program of 65 players, with 47 players suiting up for varsity games. His assistant coaches include Joe Schwabe, Marshall Lehman, Cal Tackes, Ryan Bloom, Kellen Kafka, Troy Bargender, Shay Lehmen, Joe Drexler, Craig Aschenbrenner, Rod Huther and Kwsind Lucio.

In addition to coaching football, Tubbs is also a social studies teacher at Tomah Middle School and a youth baseball and youth softball coach. He and his wife, Kelli, have a son, Jack, and a daughter, Tria.
