The Packers have announced that Shannon Mueller of Horicon/Hustisford, or “Husticon,” has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week. The program is presented by Jack Link’s Protein Snacks.

Mueller is now in his fourth year as the varsity head coach of Horicon/Hustisford. On Friday, Oct. 18, Husticon defeated Dodgeland 42-6, improving their record to 8-1 as they wrapped up the regular season. The win also gave Husticon their second straight Trailways-Large Conference Championship. Husticon looks to continue their success at home on Friday, Oct. 23, in Round 1 of the WIAA Division 5 Playoffs against the fifth-seeded Lomira Lions.

Mueller and his staff were confident in their team’s game plan heading into the regular season finale.

“It really came down to teamwork and dedication to our program this week. Coach Miller from Dodgeland is a WFCA Hall of Fame coach, and he’s always going to have his team ready, he’s always going to bring his ‘A’ game against us,” Mueller said. “We were very patient with our offense. Our offensive coordinator, Ryan Connolly, did a great job putting together a great game plan. Overall it was a great team effort; our defense played outstanding. We knew what we wanted to do heading into that game, and we were able to execute and get the win.”

Mueller grew up in Hustisford where he played football and basketball at Hustisford High School. On the football field he played guard and inside linebacker under coaches Lee Braem and Brian Bischoff. Upon graduating in 1993, Mueller enlisted in the United States Army Reserve.

Mueller’s coaching career began in 1999 as a youth football coach in Hustisford. In 2008, he ascended to be an assistant JV and varsity head coach at Hustisford High School under Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coach, Dan Simon. Mueller credits Coach Simon for taking him under his wing and helping him become the coach that he is today. In 2013, Mueller was promoted to head coach of the Hustisford varsity team. In 2016, longtime rivals Hustisford and Horicon were each struggling to field a varsity team. To save the schools’ programs, they decided to combine teams and field a single varsity team. Mueller was named the head coach of this newly formed Husticon team.

Mueller credits his senior leadership for the program’s consecutive conference championships.

“It’s a constant focus factor; every week, we told the boys that we had a target on our back and we have a great group of senior leaders this year that really stepped up and guaranteed the coaching staff that there wouldn’t be a letdown,” said Mueller. “It’s the best thing for your program when your leaders have bought in and really trust the system.”

Mueller was humbled by this award and knows it will go a long way in helping him build the program.

“Personally, I was in total shock,” Mueller said upon learning he’d won the award. “I’m truly humbled and feel very proud for our program. Our coaches dedicate so much time to our program. The money obviously is a great gesture and will be well used for many items that we need. And for the boys, the room lit up when it was announced that we won this last night, and the guys clapped for the longest we’ve heard probably all year long, and it was a pretty special moment.”

Mueller and his staff oversee 40 players in their program, with 40 suiting up for varsity. Mueller’s assistant coaches include Curtis Koch, Brandon Holtz, Ryan Connolly and Andrew Powers. He also credits the assistance of the following members of the program: Dan Linden, John Roberts, Nate LaBombord, Brian Bischoff, Aaron Bischoff, Michael Labouton and Glen Falkenthal. Mueller is also a Transportation Manager at United Liquid Waste Recycling. Mueller and his wife, Chanda, have one son, Brady, and a daughter, Sierra.
