Coach Steve Rux was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to Edward and Barbara Rux in 1965.  He graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1983 and then played football for the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was a two year letter winner and a history major.

Coach Rux began his coaching career at Idaho State University in 1989 and the University of Utah 1990-1991 as a graduate assistant.  Following this college experience he transitioned to the high school level and served as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Brighton High School in Salt Lake City Utah from 1992-1995.  Then he returned to his alma mater, Oconomowoc High School, where he coached the offensive line and coordinated the offense from 1996-1999.  Coach Rux became the head coach at Waukesha West in 2000 and has continued to coach the offensive line and coordinate the offense for the Waukesha West Wolverines for the past 20 seasons. In that time the Wolverines amassed a record of 167 wins and 65 losses.

Under Coach Rux’s leadership the Wolverines have made the playoffs 18  of the past 20 years.  The Wolverines have won two state championships — one in Division 1 in 2010, and one in Division 2 in 2004.  Waukesha West was runner-up in 2014 and in 2015 in Division 2. The Wolverines have had semi-final appearances four times: 2000, 2013, 2017, and 2019.  In each of the past seven years West has advanced to the quarterfinals or further. Over the past 20 years West has won five Classic 8 conference championships and Coach Rux has been named Classic 8 Coach of the Year five times, Regional Coach of the Year three times, and Wisconsin State Coach of the Year in 2010.

During his tenure as head coach the Wolverines produced nine Division 1 college football players, the most notable of which is a current Cleveland Browns All-Pro, Inside Linebacker, Joe Schobert.

Coach Rux would like to thank his wife, Colleen, his sons, Connor and Kellen, and his daughter, Calista, for all of their love and support through the years.  He also wants to thank all of the fine coaches that have stayed together through the years, specifically long time Defensive Coordinator Terry Beil, assistants John Burton, Derek Stebbins, Jeff Trickey and so many others that have made their mark on the Wolverine program.
