Steve King, Holmen

Steven was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin on June 4, 1954 to Roger and Vivian King.  He graduated from Holmen High School, Holmen, Wisconsin in 1972 where he played football, basketball, baseball, track and field and cross country.  He was elected captain of the football team and named Team MVP his senior season for the Vikings.

King continued to play football at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse under Head Coach Roger Harring, Defensive Coordinator Roland Christensen and Defensive Back Coach Barry Schockmel.  He earned 3 letters as a Defensive Back and was named Honorable Mention All-Conference his junior and senior years for the Indians.

He graduated in 1977 from UW-La Crosse.  He became an assistant defensive coach the fall of 1977 for Holmen and then again from 1984 – 1986 under Head Coach Jerry Binder.  In 1987 he was named the Head Coach at Holmen High School and continued in this position through the 2015 season.  He retired from teaching in the spring of 2016.  King’s teams won 155 games during his 29 seasons as the Head Coach.  He led Holmen to 5 Mississippi Valley Conference Championships and 10 runner-up finishes.  His teams qualified for the play-offs 18 times.

King has continued coaching after retirement as a Defensive Line Coach for the UW-La Crosse Eagles. This was his 5th season coaching for the Eagles.  He has now played and coached at both of his alma maters, Holmen and UW-L!

King was named UW-La Crosse Alumni Coach of the Year in 1990, District VIII Coach of the Year in 1991, 2002, 2003 and 2013.  He was also named Southwest Region Head Coach of the Year in 2013. He was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003, 2013 and 2015.  He was named the Greater La Crosse Area Coach of the Year in 2014.  King coached the Defensive Backs in the 1994 Shrine All-Star game for the North Squad.  Steven was honored to receive the Margie and Dick Rundle Positive influence of Coaching Award in 2014.

He has been a member of the Coulee Region Football Coaches Association since 1984 serving as their President from 1996-2010.  He has also been a member of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association since 1984.

Steven has been happily married to his high school sweetheart, Mary, for 48 years.  They have three great children, Eric, Erin and Emily as well as seven awesome grandchildren.
