Paul was born to Gordon and Marion Feldhausen on June 14, 1946. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1964, where he played football, basketball and tennis, he also played hockey on the city team as it was not yet a high school sport. He was captain of the football and basketball teams his senior year along with being named the MVP in both sports by his team mates. His next stop was at Northland College, where he was a two-way starter for all four years and garnered Little All-American awards his junior and senior years, also the Voltaire Perkins award as the MVP. He was drafted by the Boston / New England Patriots that spring in the first AFL/NFL draft and was an offensive tackle for three years.
Prior to playing his first season with the Patriots he was married to his college sweetheart Cheryl Mlachnik. After his pro-career they moved back to Wisconsin and he met some of the local coaches and would go and scout games for them. He wanted to get back in the game and thought what a better way than officiating. He joined the Milwaukee Officials Association where he met Jon Golembiewski who mentored him and worked with him for over thirty five years. He did not forget his coaching friends as he would talk rule changes with them and their players’ also helping finding officials for their lower level games and he still does to this day.
He was elected president of the MOA and still holds that position , also hired as the Woodland Conference Commissioner and served in that capacity for nineteen years. He has worked three WISSA state finals, eight WIAA state finals along with college and semi-pro football. He was inducted into Northland’s Hall of Fame in 1991, and Michigan Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
In 2021 he was the Wisconsin Commissioners Assoc. official of the year in district IV. He and his wife raised two children, Alberta and Patrick and were blessed with four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He and Cheryl were blessed with fifty four years of marriage before she passed away in 2022, she would have been so proud.
In addition to his football officiating he has been umpiring for as many years and has worked in the Big Ten, WIAC along with the WIAA and WISSA. He has been the WIAA rules interpreter for thirty seven years along with serving on the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee for two terms. He has worked the state finals sixteen times for the WIAA and WISSA and has been the umpire in chief at the WIAA state tournament from 2008 to the present. He was named the NFHS Umpire of the year in 1993 along with being named the WBCA umpire of the year in 1988 and 2011.
Paul calls this recognition from the WFCA an “incredible honor” from the coaches he has worked with throughout the years. He thanks his family for their support, who along with his late wife, made this all possible.
