James Matthys, Brodhead-Juda

James was born in Cumberland, Wisconsin on April 19, 1974 to Gary and Carol
Matthys. He graduated from Barron High School in 1992 where he played football,
baseball, and hockey. Jim was an All-Conference, All-region and Honorable Mention
All-State wide receiver for the Hall of Fame Coach, Ken Mueller.

James was recruited to play football at UW-Stout by Rich Lawrence in 1992. In 1996,
while a student teacher at Chetek High School, James was a part of the Chetek football
coaching staff under Head Coach, Paul Newell. James would graduate from UW-Stout in
1996 with a degree in technology education.

Upon graduation James was hired by the School District of Brodhead as a Technology
Education teache,r, assistant baseball coach, and assistant football coach. James had
the pleasure of coaching under Hall of Fame Coach, Gary Larsen. While an assistant at
Brodhead-Juda for 10 years, the Cardinals would go on to win five conference
championships, have four - level-3 appearances, two - level-4 appearances and would be
state runner-up in 2004.

In 2006, James became the head coach of Brodhead-Juda where he had the pleasure
of working with Hall of Fame assistant coaches, Jeff Jubie, Bill Prochnow, and Gary
Larsen. Jim also was lucky to have special assistants, Dave Knuth, Wade Boegli, Tim
Colden, and Brent Bockhop for most of his head coaching career. In 16 years as the
head coach of Brodhead-Juda, they would win two - conference championships, have six
level-3 appearances, three level-4 appearances and would be state runner-up in 2010.
During his career, Brodhead-Juda made 25 straight playoff appearances. James was
named Conference Coach of the Year twice, Region Coach of the Year once, and was
named Beloit Daily News Coach of the Year four times. James finished his head coaching
career with a 119 - 58 record in 16 years. James was a WFCA Conference
Representative from 2010 - 2014 and a WFCA region representative from 2016 -
2023. James had the honor of being an assistant in the WFCA All-Star Game in 2009
and the WFCA All-Star head coach in 2011 and 2023.

James would like to thank all of the players, coaches, community, and friends he has in
Brodhead and Juda, along with the special friends he has made in coaching. A special
thank you goes to his family. His wife Kim who supported him throughout his career,
daughter Bailey who was the best water girl a coach can have, and his son Blake who
he was lucky to coach for four years. His parents, Gary and Carol, who despite living four
hours away, rarely missed a game. James is currently the principal at Brodhead High
School.
