Graduate of Kerkhoven High School, Kerkhoven, Minnesota, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, MA La Crosse State, University of Iowa, SI. Cloud, University of Wisconsin, Madison

Coached football at:

Luther College 1938-42; and
Westby High School 1945-61.
His record was 73 wins, 39 losses, seven Conference Championships and 2 undefeated seasons.

Elmo graduated from Kerkhoven High School in Kerkhoven, Minnesota. While in high school he participated in basketball and baseball. The school didn't offer football.

At Luther College he played football and basketball. In his first year at Westby (1945) there were 13 candidates out for football and in 1961 there were 82.

In 1976 Elmo received a distinguished Service Award Plaque from the Coulee Region Officials Association. In 1977 the Norsemen Booster Club presented him with a plaque for his unselfish devotion to academics and athletics. He was recognized in 1976 by the "W" Club for his contributions as a District Administrator, High School Principal, Teacher, Athletic Director, Football Coach, Lettermen's Club Advisor, WIAA Board of Control President, member of the WIM Advisory Council, member of the WIAA Girls Sport Advisory Committee, WIAA Constitution Revisions Committee, member and Co-Founder of the Scenic Central Conference.

Elmo was a member of the Wisconsin Coaches Association, Wisconsin Educational Association, Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, Association of Retired Persons, State Teachers Retirement Organization and Kiwanis Club of Westby. He served as president of his church council, member of the church choir and taught Sunday school for 25 years. While he was high school principal, Elmo also coached basketball and baseball. He started the track program in 1954 and organized the Lettermen's Club in 1958.
