Wayne Steffenhagen - D.C. Everest

Wayne credits great assistant coaches, good student athletes, administrative support and outstanding community involvement for a large part of Everest's football success. He also thanks his wife, children and parents for their patience, understanding and loyalty.

Everest's 1998 State Football Championship was the fourth for Wayne. This team also was part of thirty-five consecutive conference wins. Everest has appeared in State playoffs fourteen times, winning State Championships 1981, 1983, 1989, 1998, and State runner-up, 1996. Since 1981, Everest has won twelve Wisconsin Valley Conference Championships - eight in the last ten years. In twenty-four years, Everest has won 80% of their football games, had 18 valedictorians play and over 170 athletes receive scholarships. Wayne's twenty-four year record at Everest is 206-51.

Wayne grew up in Lake City, MN, a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Minnesota, participating in football and track (won Big Ten shotput title 1963) and received his Master's from Winona State. Wayne began his career in Sturgeon Bay. From there he moved to Fond du Lac (part of 1969 State Football Championship and two State Track runner-ups 1970,1971). He coached at La Crosse and Coon Rapids, MN (State Track runner-up 1975). In 1976, Wayne relocated to Stevens Point (part of 1977 State Football Championship game). Wayne moved to Everest in 1978 and coached track (part of two State Track Championships, 1994, 1996, one State Track runner-up, 1995). Overall in track, Wayne coached State Track Champions in discus (3), shotput (1), 100m dash (3), long jump (I), 4xlOO relay (4), and 4x400 relay (1).

Wayne was Conference Track Coach -Year - 1975, 1976, Coon Rapids, MN. At Everest he was Wisconsin Valley Football Coach -Year 1981,1983,1989; Channel 7 Football Coach - Year 1981, 1983, 1989, 1996, 1998; WFCA High School Coach - Year 1983; AP State Football Coach -Year 1981, 1989 and UPI State Football Coach -Year 1983. He initiated the Everest Junior High Football Camp, North Central Perimeter Camp, Buck Nystrom Lineman's Camp, and proposed Everest Area Youth Football. In 1995, Wayne received an Optimist Club award for outstanding dedication to Everest area youth. In 1999 he was selected Citizen - Year by the South Area Business Association.
