Steve graduated from Ripon High School in 1972. He earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. As a senior, Steve was elected to the All Conference Teams in each sport. He was special mention All State in football and basketball.
Steve continued his athletics at Ripon College, where he earned a degree in physical education in 1976. Steve lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He earned All-Midwest Conference 1st team honors as a defensive back his senior year. Steve was inducted into the Ripon College Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 1977 Steve was hired as the head football coach at Berlin High School. During this time Berlin has won five conference championships. Berlin participated in the WIAA playoffs ten times. The best season was in 1989. The team finished 11-1, losing in the state semi-finals. Steve had the most wins of any football coach in the school's history (150-102).
Steve was named District Coach of the Year in 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1992. He has also served as athletic director from 1978 to the present.
Steve started coaching boys' track in 1982 and girls' track in 1996. During this time the boys' teams have won eleven conference championships, thirteen WIAA regional championships, a state championship (1986), and a runner-up championship (1989). The girls' teams have won three conference championships and two WIAA regional championships.
Steve would like to thank the wonderful community of Berlin for all the friendships and support. He is also grateful for the support of administration and the teaching staff and, of course, all of the hardworking athletes.
Steve would like to give a big thanks to the best staff a coach could ask for - coaches (and wives) Mike Hermanson, Bob Prellwitz, Lynn Mork, Al Bednarek, and Dave Kramer. These men have been associated with Berlin football for many, many years.
Steve also appreciated the encouragement and support he received from his family, parents Merwin and Ruth, and brothers, Tom and Tim.
Steve wishes to thank the WFCA for everything they do to promote the great game of football in Wisconsin.
